This is Your Sign to Keep Your Grandmother’s Quilt...
This past weekend, I stayed in a 1960s cabin tucked away in the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania. The air was crisp and mountain-fresh, John Denver played through the stereo, blueberry pancakes sizzled on the stove, and a wood fireplace crackled in the corner. There was no cell service, no WiFi—just pure, old-fashioned quality time. And for me, that meant quality time with a quilt.
The entire cabin relied on a single fireplace for heat. As a city gal who usually buys pre-cut firewood from Ace Hardware, this was a whole new world. We had to venture up the mountain on four-wheelers, scouting for the best trees, cutting them with a chainsaw, and splitting logs with an axe to keep the fire alive.
By the time the sun dipped behind the mountains each night, we were wrapped in layers: wool socks, sweaters, and quilts. Each bed in the cabin was draped with a handmade quilt, passed down through generations of the family who owned the place. The colors, textures, and intricate patchwork made each quilt feel like its own piece of history. Cozy, nostalgic, and beautifully crafted, they were a reminder that quilts are so much more than blankets—they’re works of art, often filled with stories and memories.
As someone who gravitates toward worn fabrics, primitive antiques, and folk music, I fell in love with the character of the quilts. The layered coziness of quilts in each room made me realize how these pieces—so full of character—bring warmth and personality to any space.
Each night in that cabin, I’d find myself looking forward to curling up in my own quilt. So as I’m wrapped up in a quilt writing this my message I feel compelled to pass along a bit of advice: keep your grandmother’s quilt. Or, if you don’t have one, maybe it’s time to make or find one that speaks to you.
